This a post from Malton, a first time poster. Originally sent to me by private message but in order to let more people into the fray I started a new thread on his behalf.
here goes my first use of a forum. i am a auto mechanic by trade but i am trying to build a self feeding rmh to heat a green house in utah at +by brother in laws resort zmr.com. cold hardyness is 7a i think. they have unlimited wood chips and im trying to make a self feeding wood chip rocket stove. im not sure on the sizing. i have done a couple trials with mixed results. my research and fail attempts have led me to some ?'s i need expertise with. ( my only wisdom is to find smart / qualified people to ask).
1 casting reciepies. i ordered a 50lb bag of fire clay and they said
1 part fire clay
2 parts portland cement
6 parts sand.
id love to figure out if this is correct or where i could get an approved mixture. it seems like there is tons of mixs people are using then you read later it cracked. help!! please!! also can i add cinders or lava rock as they are plentifull locally.
2 how imortant is a vortex? one of the reasons im wanting to cast is to get a round riser with a vortex. is it worth it? it seems like the benift is efficency and popssibly slowing the heat for asorbtion.
3 would there be a benift from heating primary air? im thinkiing of plumbing in fresh air? theres several fish ponds so i dont think it will get to dry. any thoughts?
4 designs i am using ideas off are bigelow brooks greenhouse heater and michael newbys trial with a self feeding wood chip design. i also like ppotty1's ideas. im thinking of making a downward wood feed pipe with air entering from the front. ive a done a couple runs just stacking fire brick up roughly using the 1 2 4 formula, and put a grate just off the floor at an angle ( bent up to catch and hold the chips). then took a peice of aprox 3" pipe and fed the chips on an angle. most of my air was coing in from the front. if did ok. leaving me with the question as far as grate placement where should the fire be as in relation to how far up in the riser? my draft seems fine and it lights easy with a bit of gas?
5 would there be a problem putting a small fan from inside a computer to push the air in for a bit of a forge affect?
6 has anybody tryed to either cast a grate from refractory of cut peices of fire brick with a brick saw?
7 any thought on casting some fins/vanes or? to get a vortex?
8 what is the purpose of making a venturi with a rocket stove?
9 on the 1 2 4 formula is the firt measument the depth of the feed?
sorry for the mess of words or rambling.
id appreciate any help thx malton
