I'm thinking of using 1" thick mineral wool board (rated at 1900 f) to "line" the insides of the outer form, which is plywood and made to be removed. Then casting 1 1/4" thick castable refractory to make the "core" the mineral wool would remain a part of the result. The mineral wool board is priced much nicer than low density ceramic fiber board which could be used similarly. Mineral wool bd $1.52/ board foot, ceramic fiber board (2300 f rated) $3.93/board ft. Is there any possibility the casting will get over 1900f on it's outside?

I'd say no chance that it would get above 19000f° on the outside!
