Hi folks
Ok so ibhave spent the summer rackibg my brains for a way to build RMHs at a reasonable cost. I am hampered by the fact that here in Norfolk UK there are no refactory suppliers, the closest is 300 miles away so I am looking at £45 just for delivery of bricks etc. I thouhht I had an easy source of clay I 1ton bags but it all got sold and I can only get 10ton truck loads with nowhere to put it all. I don't have much captial but considered just investing £100 in getting as many insulat ing firebricks as I can. Just git to a point where I either need a thirs option or take the plunge. Aarrrgghhh!

have you tried castree kilns they seem to have most things and there costs are not excessive. what i have done is arrange collection and use interparcel. 25 kg is around 13 quid. most places are happy to do that if you ask them.

Delivery/shipping isn't cheap but is a cost you are going to have to factor in. Tell prospective customers delivery is at cost or add it onto a price of a brick.
I used 244 firebricks for my 6" batch box. I had a few here already but needed to get 160 delivered from Kilnlinings. I got some non standard firebricks and fireclay etc to make the pallet up to 1000kg. This was still cheaper than collecting from my local supplier.
I called in to a local pottery to ask if they had any spare clay. They had 20 x 100 litre plastic bins full of clay they were going to recycle through a machine to make it usable again. I forget the correct potter's term for it. They were only too pleased for me to take a couple of them to clear some space. It was hard work though as I had to transfer it into smaller buckets and carry it out to my vehicle.

Thanks guys. Yeah I was put off from kilnlinings because of the £100 min plus delivery. How much did it come to mort? The pottery thing isn't a bad idea. I think I might just have to suck it up and plunge some money into this to be able to start experimenti g over the winter. I need to do that before I can start advertising as ableto build. Castree seemed quite expensive. Found a really nice supplier in shefcield, recycled brick for 90p each but again the pallet issue. Anyone found any vaccumformed ceramic fibre tubes for risers in the uk? Or refractory tubes? Really want my shed finished so I have some space to try casting.

Have you looked for local clay sources (dug up)? Also, if what you plan to build isn't TOO energetic, you might get away with second hand, used red-brick.

Yeah I have Donkey, but I currently live in the middle of a city so not so easy. Might have a poke at some new building sotes though :-D Currently thinking I need to sink some currency into this so I can buold and tinker quickly. Clay in the winter here isn't great, though my first cob built heater did alright lsdt year.

you might get away with second hand, used red-brick. Good point Donkey. I found some on Gumtree for free. I had to carry them from the garden, through the house and down the street to my trailer though. Was kept going with numerous cups of tea. Was worth the effort as I ended up with 300 Victorian bricks.

Hi twisted. I haven't called but I suspect that they won't have firebrick as there is no call for it here. Any reclaimed brick will be very expensive. I have gone down the gumtree route to get brick for the skin but want to buildwith stuff that will take more heat shock.

The section of their website for brick shows some pics - I can't tell if it's just red brick or fire brick: www.norfolkreclaim.co.uk/bricks/Some of these "look" like they could be old fire brick...but you'd have to call and ask I suppose.

have you been following the geopolymer thread? molochite 200 can be found at a investment casting foundry. zeolite from r s minerals perlite and lime from travis perkins. all the other stuff from ebay. i have collected enough bits for around 200 kilos of refractory. all i have to do now is find time to make something with it.

Yeah that mostly looks like regular brick, but I will give them a call. I have been reading through the geopolymers thread, still involves getting stuff delivered from other parts if the country. I think a pallet load of bricks is going to be my best shot. Just got to wait until I am earning more. Frustrating as I just want to get on but that is the joy of working for yourself.
