I am going to be building my outdoor RMH in a couple weeks and wanted to get some input on finishing. What is best for waterproofing? I've been looking into lime plastering, but wanted to see if anyone else has done this and how was the outcome. Thanks.

Lime is nice and WILL help to protect your stove to some degree. Cob needs to be off of the ground, so you will want a good stone (or concrete, etc, foundation. Really, no matter what you finish with, a good roof is your best protection. Even with a roof, there WILL be maintenance issues; semi-regular re-plastering, cleaning and more will be required.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to put down a concrete pad and build on it. I know a roof would be the best protection, but I hate to block the view of the stars. I'm currently researching the proper mixing and application of lime plaster, but haven't had a lot of time to devote to it. Thought I would ask some of you more seasoned builders about your experiences with it. Thanks again.

I've had good luck with slate over cob. Still needs maintenance, but mine weathered our wet winter just fine.

You could also linseed oil the crap out of it.. Mop it on, let soak in and dry, repeat till it won't soak in anymore.. I have no idea how it will react to the heat around the barrel. I've done it with other cob and earth plastered things to good effect.
The best, most immediately useful book on lime that I know of is a little, stapled pamphlet called: Lime in building A Practical guide, by Jane Schofield.

I have no idea how it will react to the heat around the barrel. Refined vegetable oils have smoke points above 200°C/392 °F.
