How do you find the radiant heat given off the stainless steel drum compared to a conventional steel drum ?
I've been considdering Old stainless steel LPG auto cylinders as drums for 4 inch portable systems, havent used one yet as was concerned the stainless steel would be a far less effective radiator of heat.

Wow.. Risky build with all the concrete.. If something needs altering, it's gonna be work. Looks nice..

Don't know what a conventional steel drum would be like so I can't compare. It's in a barn with lots of icy wind blowing through which almost eliminates any radiant effect but I am drying wood on a mesh on top of the drum and some of it is scorching. You might be right about the stainless, I hadn't thought of it's radiant properties, and in ignorance I just thought it might last a little longer. Thanks for your question Regards David

Hi Donkey, thanks for putting the pics where they could be seen The burn chamber is dincast and I had made a large firebox from troweled dincast but the frost got it. The riser is steel lined with dincast/vermiculite around it. The rest is put together with a cement mortar and as you say will need a few soft blows with a chisel should it need a revamp. So far so good, not any amazing rocket effect but starts well and is clean in five minutes with dry wood. Don't have any chimney to speak of as yet so the barn is full of smoke on start up. Question for you. I think I read a thread where Peter said the riser to barrel-top distance was not critical, I've given it 4cm and I'm wondering if this is too choked for a good rocket draw. Am I on the right track? Regards and thanks for the inspiration David

David, The minimum top gap for a 20 cm (8") dia system would be 5 cm (2"). Wider would be alright, smaller is not. I've used 1 meter (about 3') as well without any ill effects. So, making the gaps, top and side, wider would still work. Any smaller than the recommended 5 cm is too cramped.

When I ran without the oil drum the rocket effect was quite evident from the burn chamber with flame reaching to the top of the riser and beyond. Regards David

I am using a stainless steel barrel too and I couldn't tell a difference in radiant heat, mine has changed to a gold purple and blue patina as it has aged, sure looks pretty now.

Thanks for the info Wolf , I'll go on with the project using Stainless steel then. I'll post some photos via photo bucket once finished and tested.
