!!!!!crud!!!!! just lost my well crafted. long, well-reasoned response....
so now, in short, my thoughts:
insulate the "combustion engine" one ammo box use another ammo box as a "bell" above the first

Andor, I have to chuckle as I have done the same thing, lost data and rewritten it. I'm sure it would have been inspiring. I like the thought of insulating the rocket in one can. With my setup, I have some extra room behind the "engine", I was thinking Id like to utilize that space for more than just insulation. If I placed a wall to separate the engine

Sorry, fat fingered the submit button too early.
...from the test of the chamber, I might be able to use the remaining space for a wood stove or oven, possibly even a hot water tank???

What is a "bell"? I've read that term before, but have not yet understood what it is or does. Thx.

basically it's a space where hot air can stratify. in the normal bell, the input and output are both low down, and the heat at the top is constantly getting trapped. you can get major heat build up this way and it's an effective way of scavaging heat out of air flow (for both masonry heaters and quasi-rmh/masonry stoves)
in this scenario, mechartnick is talking about a successful twist on the bell idea, peter's idea of basically putting a large bell over the top of a heat riser. think a traditional barrel rmh, but with two barrels stacked on top of each other to create a taller area. it works. he's done a masonry version of the same idea. read all of his rocket/bell threads and his small scale development thread for more, certainly worth it!

I understand. I've looked at some of the threads you mentioned. I've been toying with a Idea to use a smaller ammo can over the heat riser with tubes running through tbe second can like a heat exchanged for a traditional wood stove. Now I'm thinking something like the dome off a keg roaster, or maybe a propane cylinder, so the heat from the rocket can heat it and let it radiate to warm tent space. I can also see how the bell housing could be plumbed to use the rocket to heat water. Hmmm, gears are turning. Thanks for the feedback.

Ok, so I've found a second 20mm ammo can to not only hold all my "accessories", but also to somehow add to the overall functionality of the system. One thought, as suggested, is to set it on top of the heat riser as a "bell" to capture heat for the purpose, presumably, of having radient heat for a tent or room.
I also like the idea of converting the second can into a dedicated wood stove, as seen in numerous youtube vids. But with the addition of a port/hole on the bottom that could either serve as an ash catcher OR mate to the heat riser on the rocket to allow the upper can to be used as an oven for cooking as well as a heat exchanger. Granted, id have to use a dutch oven style pot with lid inside the "oven" and still figure out how to vent exhaust gases out a stove pipe.
If you guys have some ideas or input to add, feel free to chime in. Thanks.
