Thanks Vortex,
And belated thanks to Satamax for suggestion of vermiculite board to shape the top of the throat. With all the funky shapes i cast clay perlite over cardboard forms instead. Easy to work with, but likes to crack and shrink a bit. We'll see how it holds up to the high temps. If Karl's info about vermiculite being stable to 900c it might be okay.
The two bell chambers (bench first then tall narrow one in backrest) plus the griddle top amount to a little under 5 sq.m. In the second bell i have placed a 2' tall tile downstream from the in-port to prevent shortcutting to the chimney 2' to the right.

Well, after many weeks of one welder friend not getting around to the metal work, i learned that he was in the throes of setting up a CNC table in his workshop… which turned into a major never ending reno of all kinds of things…
So, i cut myself a 1/4" mild steel slab for the cook top and fired things up to see how it burns. In a word: GREAT!!
With 20 plus ft of double wall flue it pulled fine through both bells, even with a small fire and the (temporary) door wide open.
I'll take a stack temp reading once we are closer to complete… If too hot i am envisioning of adding more baffles via the clean out in the first bell.

Further back in this thread you mentioned vermiculite board as a possible material to shape the top of the throat. Sometimes i am slow to respond...

I was just wondering yesterday what had happened with your stove build, Pat. Your not doing too bad, took me 3 years to get around to making a door. I used a square of 5mm steel that I propped over the opening with a brick, and an old shelf bracket underneath to hold it up half an inch for the primary air. Had to use welding gloves to move it and even then they'd be smoking Anyway keep us posted

Hi all my first post but I find this set up very interesting is there an update to how things stand currently ?
Am a total noob to all this rockety pleasure I Googled patio heaters many months ago and I've been led through many links and jumped many hoops to finally end up here.
The work of all the members is very commendable and to offer plans and designs for free is also a sign of the high calibre of folks on the board
I live in the UK and will be planning an outdoor configuration which will be under roof, A place to chill out keep warm and firewatch with the added bonus of cooking
The trouble I have is I read to much and get sidetracked or maybe more educated as I read and keep changing my mind on what to build
From matts half barrell system to pvdb batch box and now the more compact style masonry builds
Well anyways I don't want bang on to much just find all this very exciting If any UK members have insider info of best places buy the materials for such builds I won be grateful for you to pm me
And I apologise for the hi-jack of the thread vortex it wasn't my intention it's just your build kind of got me more motivated Thanks again
Dusty

Welcome, Dusty! If you're interested in a great, efficient cookstove, you've come to the right place. There are many styles to choose from, at various levels of difficulty to execute. Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome guys
Am currently laying flagstones ( paving ) And building a wooden structure upon it to hopefully build and install my very own masonry warmth of wonder
Am kind of stuck on whether to try casting your own wonderful design but not certain I have the skills to build the wooden moulds ( casts )
Also with this being outdoor area whether your design would warm the area enough also to heat a bench As I've only built a mock up brick rocket stove I have no idea how much heat it throws out ?
Anyways I congratulate on your build as I sit here with lego bricks trying to copy it lol. .......the wife thinks I've finally lost the plot ....

Masonry stoves in general have more radiant heat which is better for outside as you're not relying on trying to heat the air. I dont know how my stove would work with the addition of a bench, maybe this type of thing would be better for your outdoor stove: www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-GjztwtokwLego is great for figuring out how the bricks can best be used to create the design you're after. If you dont have lego you can just use the real bricks dry. Neighbours thought I was nuts when I made a mockup with the bricks in my house before the actual build

Yer I've seen matts outdoor experiments the half barrel system is fast and looks very easy to achieve maybe I could incorporate a similar bench / flue system with the half barrels within a brick setup
