I looked into this subject a while back. There was a study from Aprovecho on restricting airflow at the flue end. Also, many have experienced charcoal buildup in a poorly designed/built/run rocket stove (J-tube or elbow). I solved charcoal buildup problems in my rocket-elbow stove with a grate. I suppose I could have, alternatively, maximized production of charcoal, while providing preheated secondary air to burn the smoke. My stove could have been modified to allow for the charcoal to drop into a quenching container. I am not advocating using a rocket stove to produce charcoal, but I think it is definitely doable.
