If I might, I'd like to ask peter if bell stove configurations can ever be used like a traditional box stove i.e. chronic, slow burns ?
thanks carson

Apart from the fact that slow burns are very polluting, I think it won't work. The bell system is based on the difference in temperature of the gases inside and the hotter gases entering it. When the difference is too small, there won't be separation and the tars and smoke will be sent to the chimney directly. Nothing to gain here, the better way is to burn the cleanest (meaning hot) as possible and extract the heat downstream of the combustion chamber.

Peter, Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Having no place to put or support a 'massive' wood burner I'm always on the lookout for ways to improve my steel wood stove.
thanks again, carson
