Thanks Donkey, it is just straight cob. Maybe I will try the linseed oil. I don't really care if it lasts too long, it took no time at all to build, and I dug some much needed drainage to get the material, so, I'm not opposed to redoing it every summer or whatever. I always think of new things to try anyway.
Woodburner, it's actually surprisingly strong. I've had a couple people on it at this point and it seems totally solid. We'll see, but I'm really stoked at this point.

Oh, I missed the tung oil post, thanks woodburner. I have some of that here. You've used it on cob?

Tung oil is used for earthen floors a lot. It can be a bit gloppy (I've heard, haven't used it myself) and it takes more time to dry. You might want to thin it before using.

I haven't used tung oil on cob, only wood, and metal. It needs to be put on in thin coats, but don't thin it, it is better to warm it up (on top of your RMH would be a suitable place). If you are going to be breaking the stove after a short time, don't bother with the oil (tung or linseed) as it takes weeks to polymerise.

So Matthew, I took the laptop to town yesterday and looked at yer vids.. Interesting! From the first video, I was gonna mention that the space in the firebox (between the windows) was probably too large.. Then I saw the second video, where you've got a brick in sideways... Now I don't know what to say, besides I ain't seen THAT before..

Cool, glad you got to see it Donkey. I've been playing with the dimensions in the firebox quite a bit, and am still tuning it. Yesterday I took out the two bricks that were really pinching the fire to the window. So now it's just a pillar right in the middle of the burn tunnel, and 3" gaps on both sides. I also increased the barrel top gap. It's running really smoothly right now.
