Hi. I live in northern California and can't find bulk quantities of perlite anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get some. I need about a cubic yard of the stuff for a large ceramic kiln, and for a rocket burner test kiln that I'm building. I want to insulate the kilns with a fireclay/sand/perlite mixture. Thanks.

Perlite is most often found in horticultor stores or garden centres but vermiculite is a good alternative and less hazard to use! Also just as a passing comment both perlite and vermiculite work at their best as an insulator, without a binder like sand or clay.

Hardware store perlite goes for about $9 per cubic foot. I need at least 27 cubic feet (1 cubic yard) to start with, and probably twice that later on. That's why I'm looking for a bulk distributor of landscaping materials that can get it. Our local guy can't, says that all the new legal cannabis growers are using what's available. Id rather use perlite than vermiculite due to their relative properties at high temperatures (2420F - 2470F), and it needs a binder to stick it in place to cover the outside of the kiln 3" thick. The recipe comes from, "Japanese Wood Fired Ceramics", by Masakazu Kusakabe and Marc Lancet. If anyone knows of a bulk supplier in Northern California who offers perlite by the truck load, please pass on their information. Thanks.
