Hi all,
I've been dreaming of building a BBRMH for a long time, and finally pulled out my 2-storey chimney as part of a remodel that we're doing. I scavenged all the firebrick out of the two fireplaces (looks like they're standard 9x4.5x2.5 non-insulating firebrick) and have them stacked up for making a core. In place of the huge 3'x5' hole the chimney left in the middle of the house, we'll install a 6" double wall class A chimney, ~25' to the roof ridge from the basement floor.
I downloaded the 150mm .skp files that Peter provided on batchrocket.eu for the straight core design and the new floor channel design. Using the spreadsheet I adjusted the design so I could do a brick layout using US standard brick sizes, which are obviously different than the sizes PVDB is used to.
Would love everyone's feedback on my core design. Is anything obviously too big/small/narrow/wide etc?
The .skp is here:

In the .skp all of the orange bricks are the hard fire bricks I pulled from the fireplaces. The yellow bricks are IFB, and the grey cap will either be cast refractory or CFB. I'm not sure on the thickness of the steel for the floor channel - your thoughts are welcome. The floor channel is 2.5" wide x 1.5" high (outside measurements). The riser is 1.25" x 1.25" (outside measurements). OK sizes?
I will probably build a simple square-ish single bell in the basement where the heater will live. The basement is ~720 sq ft, and the upstairs is ~1250 sq ft. 8' ceilings everywhere. We live in the Pacific Northwest where average low temperatures are in the low 30s (we rarely get a few days that dip into the 20s). We typically heat up to 65 degrees or so - we don't need the house to be an oven. Will a 6" system be enough? We may not have enough room for big 8" bell - still working on drafting up the bell in SketchUp. When we had a steel wood stove insert we could keep the house pretty warm by burning a fire in the basement only. Hoping to find a suitable old fireplace to butcher for a door with a window, etc (old one had double doors, so not a good candidate). Lots of them on Craigslist right now. I do have other heat - I'll balance this out with a new 20 SEER heat pump I just installed.
