Came across this video recently and was pretty impressed with the design. Just wondering if anyone has done any actual design work on ratios or dimensions, etc, link

Actually, this cooking device has a lot in commom with the rather antique sawdust heater. The idea is to have a lot of fuel around an open space in the shape of a pipe. This void is acting as a chimney itself, letting the flames rushing through. In my opinion the lid could be done better, flames are escaping all around the perimeter. It seems this concept is scalable, personally I am aqainted with it through my years as an apprentice in an old-fashioned wood working shop.
Here's a video of a nicely designed and well-operated sawdust stove, complete with downdraft channel and all. Wish we had one of these back in 1962!
