This is such a creative, multi-use hybrid, I love it!
I think I missed where you posted about the hearth/ mass build… is that posted where can I find how you put that lower portion together?
Thanks so much for sharing these updates, Martyn. Greatly appreciated— and great work!

Thank you, I have been using the same mass structure for quite a few years with several different designs heating it, I might have an older video, I will have a look. The fire does everything I need which is slightly disappointing for me as I have really enjoyed playing around and experimenting!
I find the use of ceramic glass is interesting as it seem to allow the heat to penetrate and exit very quickly and it can have significant effects on the whole system depending where is it used.
I want to fit a new stainless steel top with a smaller hole to sit my wok on and I may fit a further oven tube lower down, I would like an opening observation door rather than the fixed one so I can clean the glass …so there is still scope to play around a bit more….
I build the base from a combination of high density concrete bricks and cast concrete with a 5” cast top, the barrel sits on top of half fire bricks with a 12” gap at the fire box end so the gasses have to travel back towards the chimney exit.

Thanks Fuegos, I never even know if people read my post half the time so any feed back is great. I have fitted a new top, it is a 10mm mild steel with a 100mm hole directly above the riser. I did want a stainless top but the cost was crazy so I had the 10mm steel cut on a water jet along with the hole and supporting ring and the plug for the hole it cost me €100. The water jet cutter was amazing to watch and the finish is great.

Man, those look like some great eats, Martyn! I really dig how your stove serves as the multifunctional centerpiece of that gathering space. Such a brilliant hybridization that pretty ingeniously manages not to over-compromise on any of the multiple functions it serves. That’s something I worry about constantly with my own design that I’ve re-drawn countless times.
…and the fact that yours also fits the aesthetic vibe of the whole space is ++awesome work, mate! Thanks for sharing your updates!

Thanks mate, nice of you to comment in such a way. We normally have one huge Christmas party but due to covid we have divided up our friends and family in to groups of 6-8 at a time. However as I write this we should be in the partyhouse tonight but, we had to cancel as four of our six guest have covid! On a plus note, I have really mastered cooking chestnuts !
