Say I have a cold bathroom and I want to heat the room quickly. I only need the room to be hot while I am using the tub, say for 30 minutes.
I do not need a stove that is maximum efficiency. I just need something that is easy to light, burns wood (not pellets) and can produce heat quickly for a short time.
The stove should be small and relatively easy and inexpensive to build.

A buddy of mine built a very crude little stove out of a maple syrup can some hinges and sheet metal screws. He cut a little door out of. The fires were very small.

I do like the compact form of the K-type rocket stoves that you see on YouTube. (I know the riser is not insulated so they do not reach the high temperatures and efficiency of a "real" rocket stove but they still get hot.)

I've built a 5 gallon can style "j" tube rocket that was a simple 5 inch tube that went from a hole in the lid to about an inch from the floor of the can. The flue was a 4 inch pipe that was also near the floor. This worked pretty good to put out a lot of quick radiant heat and was very easy to build. It was fired with dead fall branches. I may be getting the details wrong, it has been a few years. The design was in the Jackson/Evans rocket stove book.
Out of curiosity how do you heat the rest of the house? Could bathroom heating be integrated into a whole house heating concepts?
deadstarsstillburn: moreover, the house has 3 storeys (large attic) so I assume if I get very efficient heating on the ground floor, that will go a long way toward heating the upstairs as well, no?

dcoyte: I am planning to use a cast iron heat exchanger out of a hydronic boiler set on top of my rocket stove, flue out the top. There will be a pump moving the water through the heat exchanger into an unpressurized 2000 gal tank. Any thoughts?

Solomon: Best way to not die in a house fire is to build a stove where the really hot stuff isn't near the flammable stuff.
