Hello, I have a simple question. Using Peter’s Batch Box Dimension chart, an 8 inch system has a riser length of 57 10/16 inches. My question is: Do I measure from the floor of the batch box to get my length, or did I read somewhere that you measure from the top of the port? One riser would be 57 10/16 high from the floor of the heater, and the second value would be roughly 70 inches from the floor of the heater. I don’t know where I got mixed up, but I got confused on where the riser length dimension is measured from. Thanks Gary

@gary, riser is measured from the firebox floor. This is mentioned on the batchrocket site, Dimensions and Scalability. About halfway between the dimensions chart and the end of that specific article.

Thank you so much Peter for your quick reply and the link. I hadn’t seen that one yet. Gary

Peter, I have one more question. I’m making an 8 in system, with an inside box width of 11 8/16. I plan on using a round steel riser that is 12 inches and line it with a 2 in ceramic blanket. Would it be okay to widen the fire box by 1/2 in, so I have a straight stove, or should I widen it only where it goes around my riser? I wasn’t sure if a half an inch is enough to mess up the stove. Thanks Gary

Half an inch more for the width of the firebox is well within tolerances. That is, when one is building an 8" version, no problem.
