20201007_185616 Ceiling Bricks by Daniel Truax, on Flickr 20201007_185626 Rebuild by Daniel Truax, on Flickr So after 7 and a half full heating seasons you can see the "ceiling" bricks of the j tube failed. In the process of carefully trying to replace them the split brick heat riser that was supported by the "ceiling" bricks came apart. So a 5 minute riser will be coming to the rescue! On the other hand the Stainless steel barrel that goes over this is in great shape, even with only a two inch gap. So was the rockwool that I had wrapped around the split brick riser and around the core.

Are those chamote( refractory) briks?? I just finnished the inner skin of a bell with chamote bricks. I did think that chamote it will stand longer then 8 years. Not hoping to stand forever but 8 years sims right at the edge of beeing ok.

I dont think you need to worry about fire bricks lining a bell, they should last a life time., Dans bricks are in just about the hottest spot possible and probably exposed to double the température a bell will reach .

dcp, They were non-insulating (hard, dense) refractory bricks.

I though I was just going to replace one brick, to find all 4.5 bricks shot, then when I took all of the ceiling bricks out the whole heat riser started collapse.
I'd love to build a batch box or vortex but I just don't have the time and the heating season is nearly upon us.
Yes it is 20cm (8inches) fire it once in the morning and once at night. Exit temp 135F max... medium sized super insulated 1860's farm house... (R40 walls, R60 ceilings)

I am worried, Martin and Dan , because not only the bell is made with those heavy chamote bricks but the firebox and the riser. All together glued with Sairset E. I planned/gather information from forums for 3 years before. I started the building in 28 of jully and I fired first fire last friday on 10 october. Was long/heavy to build. but I do hope it will be ok at the end....
