hi everyone,
we are in the process of building our own super adobe house in the high mountains of oaxaca, mexico. for this house we imagine two seperate heating systems. one, a more or less typical rocket mass heater to effectively heat the house, the other, a probably less frequently used traditional rumford fireplace to stare into and sing songs at. our house will be two stories high, and the rumford fireplace will be placed directly under my kids' room. i had the idea of diverting the heat from the rumford fireplace through an inverted oil barrel on the second floor (about 250cm above the fire) to heat my kids' space and waste less of the heat. From there the smoke would pass straight on up and through the roof (about 500cm above the fire).
has anybody ever seen such a thing work? should i be worried about the smoke refusing to enter the chimney and smoking up our whole living room?
Thanks in advance for any advice! im happy to be a new member of this forum!

Hi Haux, welcome to the boards. Whatever you do, build a big open 21st century batch box instead of an 18th century rumford. That said, the batch box is much more capable to do what you are asking for. The link Satamax provided above is a good starting point.

thank you so much for your replies... i have looked at the page you recommend and am taking it into consideration. still, i continue to be interested in my original question. would it work to put the barrel over a rumford on the second floor or would it become smokey?

The Rumford fireplace is more efficient than a deeper fireplace in only that it radiates more of the heat from the open flame into the room. It does little to improve the efficiency of the burn itself. If you put a barrel above the Rumford it would condense the wood tar/creosote in the exhaust and quickly become an extreme fire hazard. The second burn that takes place in the riser of a rocket core is necessary to burn the wood tar and excess CO before trying to harvest any more heat from the exhaust with a barrel, bell or mass.
