Has anyone here ever tried to soak ceramic blanket in refractory cement to create a little extra stiffness? Would it even soak in a little, or does water just run off? Many thanks, Andreas.

I don’t think there is any need to do that, I have seen a few wonky looking ones in photos but mine is still perfectly round and straight. I used 2 x 1” layers and staggered the joint inside a 10” steel tube, I spent some time cutting the blanket accurately so both ends met each other at the right angle and were a nice comfortable fit inside the tube. I don’t see anything moving or falling apart after maybe 100 burns, the most exposed part is a bit wiry compared to fresh blanket and it has collected some ash making it look much darker and great coloured . Even if it fell apart now I would still consider it a success and very easy to replace anyway.

The insulation is all the tiny air gaps inside the fibers, if you soak it in cement you'll fill most of them with cement and lose a lot of it's insulation value. Some people have tried doing just the surface but I've heard it tends to separate after a while.
