My business site was hosted by hostgator but I've been unable to resolve an email problem with them, so today I decided to move it, the problem is sorted but it'll take up to a week for the site and all the pictures I have on there to be migrated. I just opened a quick imgur account and uploaded the pic there: from the top down they are: Old Pyroceram New Robax Old Robax Neoceram-CR

At long last, the draft limiter arrived and I installed it this afternoon. Just before dinner I ran a smallish fire in order to calibrate the thing against the Testo. It turns out the lowest setting of 10 Pa (0.10 mbar) is the right one, the draft didn't exceed 15 Pa at all. I also installed the thermocouples so during this first run I could see what happened inside the tunnel/oven thing. One thermocouple measured the temps in the heart of the tunnel, directly under the exhaust opening and not in direct flame. Incidentally also above the middle of the firebrick that's there to mimic a römertopf: 849 ºC (1560 ºF). The other one just 2.5 cm (1") behind the glass, in the middle again: 613 ºC (1140 ºC). So the glass has been within specs during this burn.
More testruns are in order now, I'll leave the thermocouples where they are and report in the DSR2 thread.

I just had a thought, on the (other thread) subject of stainless mesh. What if the glass had a piece of stainless mesh (supermarket basketish) set up an inch from it, would that deflect the intense heat just enough to prevent the etching?

Might work but would probably obscure the view just as bad as the etched glass. As I seem to be the only one with the problem, I might be able to solve it by just moving the exit back a little from the glass. I'll give it a go soon.

The felt polishing disks and cerium oxide powder that I ordered arrived yesterday, so this morning I had a go at the worst piece of ceramic glass I have, which is the old Robax. I spent about an hour at it with the disk on my rotary sander and got about half of the etching polished out. It definitely works but needs a harder grade, at least to start with. One of the videos I found on youtube was using pumice soap and then T-cut car polish to get deep scratches out of car windscreens, so I think I'll get some and give that a go next.
