I already have a steel 55 gallon drum but I can get a hold of a stainless steel drum here at work.
My question is why haven't I seen any commercial stoves or parts made with stainless?
Do they not use it due to price or can the added metals in stainless vent off poisons like galvanized pipe???
Thanks for looking and thinking, -Dan.

Unlike galvanized, stainless doesn't offgas unless you actually get it to welding temps. It is way more expensive and therefore not used for most commercial stoves but some high dollar wood fired boilers and parts are made out of it. My "barrel" is stainless (beer keg) and works great and the cover photo on the RMH book has one. Stainless is not very efficient at conducting heat compared to steel and can cause issues with warpage/crawling if heated unevenly. The main concern with a stainless barrel would be if it has gaskets pressed into the seams at the top and bottom. Some are welded, some are pressed with gaskets or no gaskets.

I didn't know about the gaskets, I'll have to take a closer look before I go about aquiring one.
Thank you for the info.
I didn't know the RMH book cover was stainless. I always thought it was oil blackened regular steel.

Hey Wolf Have you yet made a RS using the 55 gallon barrel~ I need to make one to be used on an institutional level, and need that capacity. Can you let me know if you used the 55 gal and any other specs that would be useful? Id appreciate it!
