Though this is an old thread I could add something.
Back in the day, we used to make up a stove cement for patching leaks in wood and sawdust burners from softwood ash and rock salt, about 1:1. Wet ash to make a paste, add salt and knead, let sit, knead again several times. This sets hard, rigid, doesn't shrink, and doesn't seem to corrode stovepipes etc.

Any more updates on using ashes? I ask because I hope to try casting a burn tunnel soon.

I'm very pleased with my results, but I used it for the top half of my heat riser (after I ran out of the perlite/furnace cement mix I was using for the lower half and burn tunnel) where it doesn't get bumped by sticks and such. It has held up well.
