I haven't reread all the adaptations and other kinds of rocket stoves, but somewhere in my rereading of the book I found a passing sentence about replacing the heat exchange barrel with cob. I was hoping they'd elaborate on that, but I haven't found anything. Anyone done this, built it without a barrel? I imagine it'd be tricky, but I'm incurably curious. Of course, there's the great possibility I misread the sentence., but it's worth asking anyway.

Sure did.. I just built up the edges and put a steel plate over it. After using it for a while, now I want to take it down and use a barrel.. I want more, quick radiant heat off the thing.
