Okay, another question. I'm having a bit of a standstill trying to find bags to build with, and someone suggested something I immediately laughed off. Then I started thinking. Is it possible to do the against-the-hill wall out of cob, then have a thin wall of drain rock, then the originally planned membrane and foot or so of drain rock? The rock between the cob and membrane would be so moisture attempting to collect on the membrane would make its way down to the foundation, in theory. Plausible? And what about the horizontal force of the hill?
Thoughts?
A couple other notes: I got a local on the mountain to look at the site, and she said something along the lines of "Oh yeah, that should be fine, no problem," about building that close to the road cut. I've also decided to move the whole thing a little further from it, just for added safety and invisibility from the road.
I'd still really like to do it this year, so I'm definitely feeling the time crunch.
Main question, though: Would a wall of cob followed by a couple inches of drain rock, membrane, and then a foot or so of drain rock crumble under the horizontal force of the hill, or be okay? I don't plan on dying any time soon.

The cob may well be strong enough but you're betting a lot on that membrane. Ya know, with cob, you're holding back dirt with more dirt.. You might as well just cut a shallow angle (45 deg. and below) on the hillside and call it good.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying here. Could me I'm just totally fried at the moment, but can you explain?

Sure.. When yer digging in, make the bank a shallow angle, the "angle of repose" or shallower. Then you won't need a retaining wall quite so badly, or at all, or at least can put it off till you get the materials together. It means you will need to move more dirt, but it's likely your safest option.

I think that would involve taking out a couple trees if I do that. Taking out trees there would be difficult and in my opinion, really a bad idea. I want to leave as much as I can, but I can only move my design so far away from the uphill trees before I run into the downhill trees. Or sideways trees. Lots and lots of trees around.
