looking for experience with mortar/clay slip... building 2 bell 7" system ...old solid red clay brick bottom 2/3 of first bell(+2nd bell) and hard fire brick on top 1/3 of primary bell(above riser) looking for anyones experience with what works? was planning to use refractory mortar or clay slip (fireclay/sand or grog mix) for core and top of bell and not sure whether to use same or different choice for non refractory old bricks lower in bell..wondering if regular mortar will hold up decent?

anyone's experience with what works I know a few things that don`t work with respect to the red clay question I used red clay drain tile sections for the riser leg of J-tube, both 4" and 6" ID. Both began cracking at 450*F. I then lined the 6" with castable refractory Kastlite 2600 and it held up fine as hot as I could get it. Only used refractory mortar and the castable in assembling the firebrick base, no problems there. You may be referring to red chimney liner, no results there yet This stuff works well also www.rutland.com/p/10/black-furnace-cementThis stuff doesn't stick to brick after it gets hot www.homedepot.com/p/3M-10-1-oz-Fire-Block-Sealant-FB-136/100390499 do not use for assembly Working on a blend of refractory cement using portland, fireclay, fine perlite and fine masonry sand, no results yet, may only be suitable for riser lining and not structural, IDK Initial thoughts on slip - don't think it would hold well. Firing a piece in a kiln is different from holding bricks together. Haven't tried it yet Turtle, still at it
