Hi Has anyone tried to use Leca and cement in a wirecage around the riser?

Helmer, Yes, I used Leca for insulating a riser quite some time ago. In short, it works and it won't compact the way vermiculite tend to do. So probably cement isn't even necessary.

Yes, Leca and expanded clay are the same.
Peter: What thickness did you go for?

The clay spheres were about 8 to 10 mm across, thickness of the layer something just over 60 mm (2.5") I believe.

Time for an update here:
I was thinking that more insulation is always better... so instead of Peter's 60mm leca layer thickness I aimed for about 100mm. But towards the end of last heating season we were getting smoke leaking in one place and then cracks developing in the outer layer holding the loose Leca pellets!
At the moment I am taking all the leca out again and will have a go at stabilising them with a clay slip (like the vermiculite for the heatriser). My feeling is that they are settling (like unstabilised sand) in the heating/cooling cycles, at least when the size of the pelets is 6,3-12.5mm and the gap they are filling is 100mm.
I'd love to hear of other people's experiences with leca to know if this is only happening in my stove/spacing size.
