First: Thanks to every single one of you, providing all the knowledge on this board is just awesome!
The stats: Burn chamber made similar like mats cast core. Crazy high insulation! Highly recommended! (Thanks for the conception!) Flue is built out of half barrels, ISA about 5m2 (without floor) and a volume about 700liters, divided in two "chambers". Mass weighs about 4 tons (loam, rocks and urbanite), most of it is hidden below floor-level. Until now: surface temp on average 35°C, i never burned it for more than 2 hours at a time, the cabin (~40qm) heats up quite fast. Because of the huge mass the stove has nice delay in heat transfer. Staying warm & cozy for over 24 hours. Bonus: Heated floor under the desk!
The chimney is 3 meter high, slightly insulated with perlite/clay (~1cm). Exit-temperature until now below 50°C, on average 35-40°C. Barrel top temp reaches up to 500°C, most of the time +/- 350°C. Top gap 10cm.
Final conclusion after winter, loving the RMH already.
You did well with the half barrels. Tho, there's one detail i don't like. You have to kneel to feed or clean it. Or at least, if you do this, you make it flush with the floor, so you can sweep the floor in it
TexasGonzo: Sooooo glad I found this site! Its always rewarding to find such a super group of folks! To any and all, feel free to PM me anytime. Thanks for having me!

deadstarsstillburn: Hi there. I was directed this way by folks on the Permies.com website and am hoping I can get some information on how a total newbie can get started designing, siting, building, and not-dying-in-a-horrible-house-fire with a new RMH in a 160-year old home

deadstarsstillburn: The people over there recommended either a 6" batchbox or an 8" J-tube. I don't know what those are but am going to try to figure that out. What I need is a blueprint that I can scale to fit the need for my house. I have something likne 5000 square feet

deadstarsstillburn: but I do not need to heat all of it by any means. probably only need to heat half of that, maybe less.
Oct 21, 2020 6:53:15 GMT -8
deadstarsstillburn: moreover, the house has 3 storeys (large attic) so I assume if I get very efficient heating on the ground floor, that will go a long way toward heating the upstairs as well, no?
