here's a question from a rookie. this is my first thread so if im doing something wrong just tell me . what are some good ways to use saw dust?
as soon as i get my rmh built i want to design some sort of machine or way to make saw dust logs. with out aditives i hear its around 6000 psi to get them to bind on there own? i have access to at least 4000 lbs of hard wood sawust a month . in tinkering ive got it to burn good in my rocket stove ( when the drafts is working well )
but i just saw the hugelkultur raised garden beds donkey told about. ??
i have used it with grass to get the compost hydr/carbon mix wheres it works best
either way just looking for some ideas.
thx

Welcome, Malton. There are some rockets/gasifiers that use saw dust/woodchips. Check youtube. Google the Back to Eden method of gardening.
I'm sure Donkey will be around soon.

Wow.. That's a heck of a lot of sawdust! It can be mixed with clay and used as insulation in some of the more neo-lithic (not often long lasting) stove models.. I've seen stoves that are designed to burn specialized biomass pellets, which can be pressed in a home-made gizmo (you can search the forum here for that) . Lots of possibilities!
I suppose it can be used to build hugel beds, don't mix it with the dirt/soil, but make a distinct pile/row out of it and cover. Mixed in, it will sap nitrogen like gangbusters before it's rotted and then gives it back.. If it's a distinct layer, the interface to do the nitrogen transfer thing is more reasonable.. You'll probably want to plant in nitrogen fixers anyway and maybe even salt it with some mushroom spores/mycelium, if it's not already.

With that much available, I'd think you're a candidate for the pellet mill business. Buy 'em for $$$$ www.makeyourownpellets.com/pelletmilldiesel.html or build your own www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tYPbd2gcpE The binder works well so I hear, but that doesn't fit with your "no additives" plan Turtle

Depends on how you look at it - Glass half empty or half full. When you burn stuff you learn. And sometimes you will discover that you were right.
