I stumbled onto a device that accomplishes the same task with much less risk to the fingers. Video tells a lot. I've got some scrap and an old axe head to cobble this together www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200647343_200647343Since the ash I cut is only 15" long the pieces will split well. I've never had an original thought, but will gladly give credit (and royalties as needed) to them that do Turtle

There's a really interesting back story to the development of that piece....

I built a couple drying racks out of 2x4 and expanded metal for the split wood. Works famously; three days in the sun, wind and nothing over 10% moisture, most at zero per this cheap inaccurate meter www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/measuring-tools/digital-mini-moisture-meter-67144.htmlBuilt a staging rack to bundle with plastic freight-film so the dry bundles can be stacked away neatly. Getting all the bugs worked out now so one day I can open "Turtle's Primitive heat and light supply" if needed when shtf Yeah, everyone has a dream I guess Turtle, still at it
