Ya know, hpmer.. You can make heat risers with pearlite/clay and nothing else. They do fine as long as they don't take a hit or get wet.

That's a good idea. I think I will try that, probably in a 4:1 ratio, perlite:clay. I'll have the heat riser enclosed in sheet metal so that should protect the outside wall, and I guess I'll just have to see how the inner one holds up. Thanks for the thought.
