Any recommendations for chimney caps/cowls? I've been experiencing downdraughts/backdraughts during heavy winds on the 8" (200mm) twinwall insulated flue in my shed that I use for test stoves. The flue is inside the building envelope running up an outside wall and exits through the roof approx. 10ft (3m) horizontally from the ridge. It is level with the ridge but I can add another metre length. Currently I just have a small cap.

If you want the best functionality do an H cowel. A simple T at the top would use the same physical effects.

Actually Karl, the way I read it says it would not. The draw on an H Cowel has certain aerodynamic properties that a simple T does not. It can actually accentuate the draw when the wind blows from either direction and if rain comes down a simple T during a storm would allow water to the flue, an H cowel would not. That is the way I read it when researching it anyway. I think I will use one for my build, it looks simple enough to build one for ones self and not have to purchase one ready made.

I used an H cowl for awhile with my old steel wood stove and it solved a lot of my old wood stove cross wide problems... 3 feet more of stovepipe even worked better...

@ Karl - I tried a T and it was great if wind was blowing north/south. When direction changed it blew back down chimney.
@ Cramer - I've now adapted it to an H cowl using the inner pipe from two twin wall Ts I'd salvaged. Doesn't look too pretty but will be a useful experiment. Will try and fit today (weather permitting) and post results back.
@ wolf - I have a metre extension I can fit on but I'll see how the H cowl works first.
@ doggy - I'll keep the outer twin wall Ts to make a rotating cowl if needed.

Fitted H cowl today - seems to have solved the downdraught problems. I'll fit the 1 metre extension when I have some help.
