Hi everybody. Often we hear people wanting to retrofit a rocket into a fireplace. Here's what i came up with for a guy at permies. It's just food for thoughts. But if i had one to do, i would do it this way or nearly. Well if it was an old english hearth of the large type, i'd try to fit it all inside. Or even in a french "cantou" Well, i hope it can be of some use to someone. Duh, the forum seems like it won't accept any attachement uploading? Here come the ones from permies. www.permies.com/t/31382/a/13852/chimneybell.skp?download_attachment=true

Really a strange coincidence, Max, that I woke up this morning thinking of this very subject! My present interest in wood burning, and then RMHs, arose a little over a year ago when we inherited a Forest Service lease-cabin in the mountains. Had spent some time there ~40 yrs ago, so it wasn't exactly new to us, and have for the past year been correcting years of deferred maintenance. In doing this, thoughts of the RMH got sidetracked, most likely because I couldn't visualize how an RMH could be implemented there. Heating has always been one of this cabin's major deficiencies. The problem had been first addressed with a very poorly constructed, downright ugly, fireplace (60-80 yrs old), and then because of its obvious inadequacies, liquid propane gas heaters. But there is so much wood around just asking to be burnt. So, your idea is of great interest to me. Some thoughts concerning implementation of your RMH-bell design in this cabin. I would appreciate your thoughts as well: - Major problem is that our stone chimney - the existing thermal mass - is mostly external; only a small area (less than 40 sq ft) is exposed to the inside of the cabin. This situation could be improved by building another room to inclose the chimney, but since the FS won't allow this, by simply insulating the outside stonework. Might also want to block off the upper portion of the stone chimney (inside the flue.)
- The floor is a rather flimsy wood frame construction, so the only place for additional mass is over the rather narrow outer hearth (~18"x 6').
- I would want to make sure creosote is totally removed from the stone chimney flue before using it as a bell with a rocket stove.
Your timely post has revived my interest in putting a RMH into this cabin. I had pretty much decided there was no way to do it, but perhaps your suggestion of a bell in the flue would work (with proper insulation of the outside surface of the stone chimney. Thanks. obob
