Very interesting discussion there.
What is the purpose of the CO2? Am I right to assume it is needed to speed the hardening process? How long would an appreciably-sized heat riser take to harden in the air?

What is the purpose of the CO 2? Am I right to assume it is needed to speed the hardening process? Yes, it can be used to speed the hardening process. A mix of clay, sand and sodium silicate will dry only slightly faster than a mix of clay and sand, though starting from the surface the physical strength will raise a lot faster depending on the exact mixture and temperature. One could put things in a plastic bag and use Natrium bicarbonate (baking soda) and vinegar as a CO2 source. Natrium bicarbonate and vinegar could also be used to create some kind of foam.
