This build is absolutely amazing! Job well done. Absolutely beautiful construction!
Out of curiosity... you have a single wall bell made of brick and mortar. Do you have any issues at startup with smoke pouring out from the cracks of the bricks or through the mortar? Maybe I missed it, but do you have a bypass in place for starting up cold? Thank you! Its a double skin construction. No leak at all ! No bypass either. I prime the stack with a heater at the begining of the season, that's it.

Same thing here! Coal phase last very long time, surely due to the big amount of wood burnt. That's why i like to burn soft wood or half and half blend of soft and hard wood so less coal left in the fire box.

Alex how many kilograms can be burned in the fireplace? how long the fire to burn everything? thank you AG filwifi I filled the box with 35 lbs (15,9kg) of hard wood in 16" sections. I could fit a little bit more weight in 18/20" section. It burned everything in about an hour before turning into the coal phase.

I dont have any bypass but I dont think I need it anyway. The stove will be in continuous use from october until april maybe may. We have very long and very cold winter here in Quebec.
I place a heater fan in front of the chimney cleanout for half a day to preheat the stack at the beginning of the season. The stove start with ease, instant pull and no backdraft.
It's weird that your chimney doesn't exced more than 70C/80C with constant use. Maybe because is a smaller system.

Congrats! What's the average stack temperature? The laser thermometer indicate 100 C at the base of the stack.

Congrats! What's the average stack temperature? Thanks Peter!! By stack, do you mean the chimney? If yes, I will take measurement this evening. 25 ft insulated prefab chimney plus about 12 ft plunge channel.

Thanks guys! The first bell is 8m2 and the second one is a tad smaller than 2,5m2 if I remember well. Here a picture of the beast in action with the new tile work on the floor.

Yes Mister! We are very pleased with the beast! Since it's not very cold yet outside (between 2°C and 5°C in the night and morning and around 10°C/15°C during the day) . I only do one fire in the morning and an other one at night with mostly soft wood like pine and hemlock (leftover of the construction) . The thermal mass of the first bell is in the 55°C/65°C range. The second bell is around 30°C/40°C. The draft is very strong as we have around 35 ft high chimney with the plunge channel. The indoor temperature is very stable at 23°C on the first floor. The house is still not hundred percent air tight yet and it's really confortable. The second floor might be too hot, I will try to recirculate the heat with a duct and a small fan. When cold weather will be here, I expect that with two fire in the morning and two at night with hard wood like maple and ash the temperature range would attempt to reach 70°C/80°C. But anyway I will keep you informed of it's behavior.

You can be sure I will keep you informed of his behavior. This will be my first experience with a masonry heater. I have heard many good reviews but never had the experience
I want to thank Peter for all the time invested in research and giving us access to all the necessary information!
Max! I sent you a pm
