I have a Fisher Fireplace insert with no fireplace to put it in. My idea is to get fire brick, surround the cast iron stove, add a combustion chamber on top of it made out of bricks, then connect it to an exhaust tube near the floor to make a cob bench before the exhaust tube goes through the wall and out side into my green house. The fireplace insert is much larger than what I've seen as a normal twig-burning fire chamber. It can burn 22" logs if I want it to. I can make the chamber smaller by filling the insert with fire bricks. Do you think this idea will work? I also want to incorporate copper tubing into the brickwork next to the stove to help circulate hot air to various parts of the house above. This stove will be in the basement.
Please let me know if you think this kind of "rocket stove" will work.

You could do this but what do you gain by reusing the stove? If your going to construct a bell from brick and alter the stove why not just build the entire stove from scratch? It would work but it will not burn nearly as well as a stove built to Peter's tested dimensions.
