I'm stacking 2 55gal drums beside my 7" batchbox stove as a bell.
I'm assuming I need a bypass for start-up purposes. I don't have space to duct behind the bell. I would rather not duct in front of it either.
Is there a way to go through it?
The only thing I can think of is a 22"ish manually operated butterfly valve at the bottom of the barrel stack, loosely seperating most of the bell during start-up.
Have any other ideas?

photos.app.goo.gl/EakVvNFbKC1Svxzd8So I went through it. Works well, haven't had time to play with it much. Dumping much more heat into the space vs just tossing it up the flue. If you can believe the candy thermometer stuck in the flue, exhaust temp hovers around 200 degrees at the top of the burn to down to 150 as it's coaling. I like it! BTW what are some decently accurate thermometers we can use for these things?

I ve been using the cheap ones in flue and bell - theys show max 450'C and have the censor in a rod ... - for 2 years now with no problem. I have four of them; one had to be replaced though, but they seem to display zero when they break. The one in the hottest place is on top of the J- tube; actually three years and still working. Bypass makes big difference... my brick chimney gets to 200'C with it open and to max 70'C when closed so it is helpful but u also lose much when it is open too long... Thermometers I use; u get em in different rod lengths... Wood oven thermometer
