Hi everyone,
I've got this question on my mind regarding insulating the part of the bell above riser level. It's totaly made of adobe bricks and we are at the stage of putting super wool on the inside of the bell and put an inner wall of split fire bricks.
But what are the pro's and con's of only putting superwool on the inside of the bell and leave the outer skin like it is - adobe bricks. So no second wall of fire bricks. It makes things a lot easier and I can imagine we can transfer more heat to the lower part of the bell where there is a dead end bench.
Thanks for sharing your views.

Hi Skywalker,
I would think that the firebricks would not add much benefit. I would just use the wool assuming you can keep it attached.

Having a layer of superwool in the higher regions of a bell means that part won't warm up that much, if at all. Having a sandwich of superwool and firebrick that's exposed to the hot gases, on the other hand, means the bricks will absorp heat and transport it through the superwool at a very slow pace.
Insulation won't stop heat, it will slow down heat transmitted through it. So, hours after the fire dies down the top part of the bell will get warm, spreading the heat of the fire over many more hours.
As such, it's a choice to make whether you want slow heat or not.

That makes sense. Thank you.
