I am considering using a Ceramic Blanket, 2" thick, to construct a heat riser for a future build. I would use a large OD vent pipe or wrap the exterior of the blanket with a wire fence/mesh hold the shape. My main concern would be that the riser would not hold heat, but obviously be a well insulated channel for heat. "Heating up the riser" would not really occur, thus would this make starts more challenging? I am sure once enough heat is in the firebox and draft starts, this would be just fine.
Thoughts and input please.

Christened the 5min riser and becoming very popular, normally the matting is cut to the correct width and inserted into the appropriate sized metal tube. Some folk use 1” blanket, I used 2” myself.

I assume the internal surface of the riser would heat up ultra-fast, that's the main point, i.e it gets up to full-combustion temperature quicker than any other material. ??

Yup, heats up in a heartbeat, gives you the quickest possible start-up time.

Why do you want to use a 2" over a 1" CFB?

I did a bit of experimenting with 2” - 1” and double layer 1” .
The experiment was based on how well the blanket fitted the tube rather than its performance inside the riser,
I found that by laying two one inch pieces inside the tube with a staged joint, seemed to offer the best looking end result. I was struggling to get a really neat and tight joint useing a single two inch piece, I even cut it on a bench saw to get the right angle. I found that by staggering two layers, they sort of locked together and the joint was far more stable. But hey I am being very annul about this, I am sure a single one inch is fine for most people it’s just the luthier in me that forces me to work that way and I also did not want the material coming loose inside the outer tube and causing any obstruction by falling away or the joint opening up due to shrinkage?

Excellent. Cost effective and easy construction. I'm planning on using sodium silicate to bind the ends.

Would a ceramic fibre heat riser work OK in a Batch Box Rocket?
The reason I ask is that I remember Peter saying that a BB uses a proportion of the heat riser as the 'burn tunnel'. I've used firebrick splits in the lower section of my 5" BB and they are showing signs of degradation after two winters use. At some stage I'll have to do some repair work on my riser but I'm concerned about the durability of the ceramic fibre if used in a BB riser application. Has anyone successfully used a ceramic fibre riser in a BB?

Just yesterday I fired up my 8" brick bell J tube for the first time. The ceramic core and 5 minute riser surpassed any and all expectations I had for them.
55 gal barrel and a large bell, very wet clay , been below freezing for weeks, shop temp was rite at freezing... Literally no more than 5 minutes and I was getting 830F on my barrel top!
I nominate Pinhead for sainthood for thinking of this!

Has anyone successfully used a ceramic fibre riser in a BB? Yes Pinhead did. As far as I know the thing is in it's second season now. At some point he ran it so hot a big log that barely could fit through the door did burst into flame before he was able to close the door. donkey32.proboards.com/thread/3378/minute-riser-owners

Thanks Peter. When I need to replace my BB riser I'll try the 5 minute version and report back

Yes, I'm still using my original 5 Minute Riser without any issue. I lit the stove the day before yesterday from cold and it worked as well as the day I built it.
The blanket is drastically out-lasting the mortar around the firebox port.
My PBB is a 6-inch version using 1" of blanket inside an 8" stovepipe. I regularly burn Osage Orange splits which is the hottest burning wood I've ever encountered.

I haven't modified the stove in any way since I built it, though I need to repair the throat area, as my clay-ash-sand mix isn't holding up very well there. Matthewwalker sent me some ceramic fiber board to repair it but I misplaced the box for a long time (recently found it) so I haven't even repaired that yet.

Hahaha this is very good to know thank you man! Fire brick is not accessible here and I made a mix for the fire box but it’s not holding up at all. Need to work on it
