Hello, It's my first post her, thanks for all that good stuff. I'm french and not very fluent in english, it's my first attempt to use it in a forum. So here's my first batch box stove, a little one to try it and use as supplemental stove for my kitchen. It's a 4" , 100mm model, build with casted vermiculite with aluminate cement. I made it the simpler i can, so there's no p channel, but i added a kind of walker channel. The cast exactly fit the peterberg dimension, excepted for high of the port that i reduce to compensate the lack of the p-channel. It work very well ! There's lot of smoke on the picture but it was the first lightning, still a lot of water to poor off. After two fire there's just a little of vapor who quickly dissolve after the chimney. And as i can put my hand on the exhaust pipe, even when fire is strong, i conclude that it reach the highest efficiency . After this satisfying experiment, i intend to build a bigger one to replace the fire box of a J-rocket mass-heater. But i have some other intends much more experimental, that's why I'm here to meet you.

That is very fine. I especially admire the very clever door fabrication.

Thanks oxbow, matthew, vortex . You are encouraging. I make it neat cause i intend to eventually develop and sell some kind, it's a prototype. As it is, it cost me almost nothing, so it's possible do do really better and remain cheap.

What is your recipe for the aluminate cement?

"ciment fondu" can hold 1200°C, and it's the only serious refractory cement available in usual shop, not very expensive (same for the vermiculite). I mix 1 cement/4 vermiculite for the riser, 1/3 in the box. It had to be carefully packed. The riser is very weak, it is best for the fire box with 1/3 ratio, but not hard enough to endure several load. At last, I have use sodium silicate to harden the firebox. The result is far from indestructible, but hard enough to last some years.
In the future, I will use 1/3 ratio, and maybe try with more cement. I also intend to add waterglass in the mix. I'm quite sure that be strong enough, except maybe in the fire box.
This materials have been chose because they're cheap and easy available. It's actually too weak for a serious project, but perfect for a prototype like this. In spite of, the high insulating properties of this stuff is interesting and I think that a thin layer of harder mortar be enough to have a durable firebox, if water-glass not.

Hi Patamos, no chet portal in there, it is a fragment that broke. Satmamax, i'm in Aveyron, the west side. Here is a couple of pics that shows a little better the heart of the beast: it is difficult to see, bolts are welded to the bottom of the barrel to tighten it against the plate which is under the firebox. With a fiber gasket would be perfect, but as I did not have I used mud which work well enough. Sometimes it condenses, could see a few drops ooze. It does not seem to interfere with the operation. What do you think of that?
