Where I live, I can get vermiculite and scoria. I haven't found anywhere that sells perlite though.
Which is better for insulating the feed tube and heat riser? Loose (but tamped) scoria, or a vermiculite/clay slip mix? (Scoria is quite a bit cheaper here, I guess because it's a locally-extracted product.)
Also, should I insulate the whole burn tunnel, including the feed tube? I'm pretty sure I've seen some folks say not to insulate the feed tube…
