It's lined with firebrick.
The only steel part is the feed tube, feed tube wont get hot enough to destroy the steel.

He did say from the start that he planned a firebrick liner, so nobody tried to dissuade him...
But I see that the feed tube is not lined, which does bring up the "doomed" aspect. My personal feeling is that there is far more work and expense put into structural steel than will be worth while; it won't last any longer than a firebrick-built core in use. Meanwhile, the steel will conduct more heat than brick away from the burn tunnel, reducing its efficiency. And the bottom of the feed tube will be exposed to extreme heat and oxygen, so may not last too long.
The whole "outside air supply" idea, of giving the fire the freshest air rather than using the staling room air and letting the makeup freshen the room, doesn't appeal to me. Especially with the plan to have the makeup earth-conditioned; that effort doesn't seem worth while if it is not going to be felt in the room. I have read that a RMH will use around 1/4 to 1/2 of the fresh air that a space should have anyway, so it's not like it is a problem to use room air for it.
