Ha! Two semesters in college and speak some Spanish, visited France (Limoge and Orleans) after college. Je parle tres tres peu francais. Just makes me feel worldly to throw in some French. Fun to 'collaborate' from folks far far away.

Thanks for pointing that out, Shilo.
Getting that measurement may be problematic, though, as I don't anticipate being at the top of my chimney until the weather gets warmer, to do a little tuckpointing. If it wasn't so high and steep, I'd climb up now.
So, in what range should that temperature be - top of the chimney at ember stage?

I think I ended up with a really great Rocket Heater. I think I have it dialed in. As you can see, primary air was a little big, so I had to restrict it. Even though 1) It's not the most beautiful thing to look at, 2) the location stinks, and 3) it would never heat much more than the basement and maybe a bit on the first floor, it feels good to have off-grid backup heat. It fulfills a need. Thanks again for hosting the discussion, Donkey, and for the rest of you for pushing it forward and fleshing out all of the details..
