Hi guys,
Okay, so question is has anyone cobbed the barrel? If so, does it have an effect on the ISA needed to keep things running sweet?
For the barn I'm thinking of doing a variation on the Walker bell oven. The oven will be cobbed and the missis thinks that cob on top of a metal barrel will look aesthetically challenging. So, I was thinking of perhaps wrapping the barrel in chicken wire and cobbing that to keep the stove looking more uniform.
Obviously the radiant heat will suffer, but perhaps will make it possible to warm the derriere on! I'd like that, reminds me of the old bum bar on the Rayburn I grew up with.....
Anyway please share any thoughts and experiences to do with thickness of cob and possible mix ratios to minimise cracking...

Mike; Many people have cobbed over their barrel. The downfall to completely covering your barrel is the possibility of stalling your stove if the temps were to equalize inside & out on the riser. My first stove had 2/3 of the barrel exposed ,the current stove has less than 1/4 exposed and I haven't had any stalling issues. I suspect that with a good vertical chimney at the end of your mass you won't have a problem. I can't give you a good mix as I continue to have cracking issues each season. I can recommend using fiberglass in your mix to help bind it , straw seems to burn out over time. Attachments:

I've built fully covered barrel systems. Like BG says, you can add fiberglass fibers, or use drywall tape to wrap the outer and plaster that. I've also built surrounds with hardi backer and infilled with cob for a cleaner look. They work fine covered, but you miss out on the "woodstove" style radiant/convective thing that the barrel does, which is a nice component of how these things heat the space. Here's a photo of an outdoor system, with two barrels side by side, covered...

Thanks for your feedback guys and the great pictures.
Yeah, Matt I know I love that woodstove heat thing, gets the cheeks all rosy and feels so cosy! Aesthetics can be a killer! Hmmm, just thinking aloud, the other half being tucked up with the kiddies, perhaps the insulated cob on top of the oven could be painted to blend in with the barrel? BG's got a lovely pink hue to his barrel... Or paint the barrel cob coloured...
Oh BG, what's your felt experience of living with ? Any pros and cons in particular comparing 2/3rds to 1/4 exposed?

Hi mike; I prefer the taller cob covering, little less heat radiating but less bare metal to stumble against ! My rmh is in a green house/ artist studio and it can get crowded in there. Plus we prefer the stored heat in the cob rather than the instant heat off the barrel. I dyed the cob with red & some black concrete coloring to get that terracotta look to it. Tom Attachments:
