This September, I am planning to go down to my land to camp on it til May.. working on an entire list of things to start making it my full-time woodstead. My land is in southern Missouri in the Ozark hills and quite remote, I love it. Normally, in the winter, it's above freezing during the day but can freeze overnight. However, last year, it was the coldest winter since 1978.
One of the first things I want to do is build a bench style barrel mass heater with seating for two on one side and a platform for a 150 gallon water tank on the other side of the barrel. I'd put this under a 10' x 10' roofed area and use it as my outdoor kitchen.
How likely is this to work to keep the water tank from freezing at night? Should I run the stove pipe completely around the perimeter of tank and build some mass up all four sides of the tank?
I don't want to make this too complicated as I have never done anything like this before. I'm thinking buying one of Matt Walkers 6" I.D. x 24" risers and casting my own J-box. I still need to order the "book" as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tobit, my suggestion is to not get too wrapped up in planning all the details. Once you are camping playing with different layout ideas and concepts will be a great afternoon project, and you can learn a ton about the stoves and what is possible along the way. If I were going to do what you are planning, I would get down there with a good kit of tools and some materials and play with systems through the fall. You will for sure be able to accomplish your goal of keeping water from freezing, and you will develop the understanding to be able to design the system you really want. Good luck man.

Yeah, Matt. I agree. I was just hoping to cast some of the items such as the J-box here because a) I have no sales tax b) my land is quite remote and c) I am going to be bored this summer. You make perfect sense though.
