I've seen a few videos with people lighting their stove.. There are, (apparently) a lot of ways to go about it, most of them smoky difficult and annoying. This is how I was taught to do it by Ianto Evans years ago.

My stove doesn't like that way. I put my wood in first cold, throw some card board on top of the wood, light it and cover about 2/3s of the hole with a piece of metal. Has been lighting flawlessly like this all winter with no smokeback. But I have 30' of external 6" vertical chimney pipe on a 8" system and constantly cover the opening so only 1/3 is open. THAT is the ONLY way it wants to run and I don't argue with my stove since it keeps me warm.

For me, with my 8" J tube the best way is to put two pieces of wood (nice if its pitchy) blocking 90% + of the burn tunnel. Then two pieces of paper & some kindling , no smoke back and it works every time . Without blocking most of the burn tunnel there is so much draw that my paper wanted to float up the riser before getting the kindling going.
